Description

Smallsword Further BADC Certification Course

This course will cover intermediate/advanced weapon system Smallsword:

Suitable for anyone with a current BADC Standard qualification.

Students will learn style, techniques and a fight choreography routine in smallsword. At the same time, the course is an acting course, and students will be expanding upon their ability to perform a dramatic fight scene; stepping up their ability to engage in a truthful and fully committed performance with a completely hidden safety technique.

Quick, deadly, and originally the sword of gentlemen, aristos and kings, the smallsword later became the weapon of serial duelists, social rebels and revolutionaries.

Historical figures who defied their time and wielded this wicked weapon include the intersex Chevalier d'Éon, the cross-dressing opera star La Maupin, and the famous composer Georges Boulogne Chevalier de St. Georges; who in 1792 the National Assembly appointed commander of the Légion Nationale des Americans. Known as St. Georges's Légion, this was the first ‘all coloured’ regiment in Europe!

The small sword is just as much a statement of class as it is of violent possibilities. Featured in plays such as 'les Dangerous Liaisons', and films like 'The Count of Monte Cristo', the ability to manage a smallsword is a prize tool in the actor's box.

This course is led by Tim Klotz, who has been leading smallsword workshops since 1997. (some say 1697) He is Fight Director at Drama Centre London, has been an alternative fencing consultant to British Fencing and was a founder of YoungBlood.

This is a BADC affiliated course. The exam fee is included in the course price. All BADC qualifications are valid for four years.

If attending this module to complete further BADC intermediate qualification, students should note they must achieve a distinction grade in 2 weapon systems to achieve a BADC intermediate actor/combatant qualification. To complete a BADC advanced Actor/combatant qualification, students must achieve a distinction grade in four fighting systems- including advanced unarmed.
