Renewals Workshops are run as an 8-hour day, inclusive of warm-up, lunch, and breaks, and may be one of three categories: Swords (Rapier & Dagger, Rapier & Cloak, Smallsword, Broadsword, Swashbuckling, Sword & Shield) Swords Renewals must cover: Basic safeties (e.g. no points crossing through the face), Cueing System, Principles of Parrying, Thrusts, Cuts, Footwork and Stance (Pass Forward/Backwards, Double Pass, Traverse, Slip, Cross, Lunge), Intention. Film Fighting (Foundation in Film Fighting: Unarmed) Film Fighting Renewals must cover the appropriate techniques and principles of either Unarmed or Swords. Other (Unarmed, Knife, Quarterstaff) Unarmed Renewals must cover: Cueing System, Negotiated Contact, Soft-on-Soft, Victim Control, Communication, Consent, Controlled Descent, Intention. Renewals of Knife and Quarterstaff must cover the techniques and principles of a Sword Renewal. Assessments are run at the end of the workshop, and are administered by the renewing teacher, who is responsible for deciding whether or not the student student has successfully understood and demonstrated the techniques and principles required to be a suitable level. The assessment may take two forms: Stage (Unarmed, Rapier & Dagger, Smallsword, Swashbuckling, Broadsword, Sword & Shield, Quarterstaff, Knife, Rapier & Cloak) Students perform a 14-18 move fight across 2-3 phrases. These phrases may cover a single weapon system, or may span multiple. Screen (Foundation in Film Fighting: Unarmed) Students perform a ~6 move fight shot from different angles with feedback. Students may either ‘Pass’ or ‘Not Pass’. Renewal will occur at the level last attained. Students may renew all weapons within the category of the given Renewal Workshop, but are not given additional certification for weapons they have not previously certified. A renewed certificate is valid for a period of two years, with an additional grace period of one year.
